Measuring by Using God’s Word

Colossians 2:6-8 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)
6 Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
8 Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elemental forces of the world, and not based on Christ.
Anytime you listen to a sermon, a teacher at school, talk radio, the guys in suits and ties knocking at your door, etc; ALWAYS go back to Jesus and the Bible as your measuring tools. Pray for wisdom to interpret anything anyone has said on an issue. You can be on steady ground when you compare what anyone says to what is stated in the Bible. You know if someone makes a philosophical statement opposite of what God says, then you have to make a decision.
Will you follow the prescription of God’s teaching on issues in life or what a popular talk show host blabs from her mouth(wheather it be Oprah or Katie Couric)? If they are not consistant with what scripture teaches then you need to stop listening to their retoric. Feed on the Word of God and you will be able to determine what is Holy and pure and right.
This includes anyone claiming to be a spokesperson for God( I include myself.) Always do your research and go to the Bible. If a spokesperson doesn’t line up on the fundementals of the Word of God(the Trinity, Jesus dying on the Cross, the God inspired truth of the Bible, etc) then you need to show the person the error they have made( Help the brother or sister in the Lord to recorrect them back to God’s Word. They might accidentally may not be aware of their error. Then there are some who blatantly twist God’s Word to draw people for power gain. These kinds you need to just steer clear of their twisted theology.
Just because someone claims to be Christian, doesn’t mean the say or teach is Biblical. Like the Bereans in the book of Acts, go back to scripture to see match what someone says to what God has already stated. The devil can come in as an angel of light to trick people. Don’t be deceived. When you daily study God’s Word with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, you will know how to react when people make statements from a church, talk radio, a politician, or anyone.
2 Timothy 2:15 (Amplified Bible)
15Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.
